In Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
This week we prepare and will celebrate the birthday and life of Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Perhaps this is the beginning of a most
difficult time in our observances. You see, we have the victory of
having a national holiday in honor of Dr. King; we have a huge memorial
in his honor on the Mall in Washington, D.C. among the shrines to
Jefferson and Lincoln and we have the first African American President
of the United States being sworn in for a second term using Dr. King’s
Bible at his taking of the oath of office. The Inaugural ceremonies just
happen to coincide with the King observances. It’s enough to make some
think that we have truly “overcome”. But let us not forget what Thomas
Jefferson once said: “eternal vigilance is the price of freedom”
