What's Ahead for Same-Sex Marriage
There is a lot of anxiety regarding the forthcoming Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage. Here is a concise summary of the legal issues that are and are not in play.

Abortion or Poverty?
Religious conservatives are regularly criticized for worrying too much about issues like abortion and sexual ethics, and not caring enough about causes like relieving poverty. If how much money they give to charitable and activist organizations is any indication, the reality is much different.

The Politics of Happiness
As I've noted in these reports, an increasing amount of time and money is being spent in the academy and the business world to figure out what makes people happy. This article reviews recent books on the phenomenon, one of which argues:
Leftish politics therefore plays a key role in forming an overwhelming political, academic, and professional consensus around the idea that growing numbers of 'the hapless public' are psychologically vulnerable, or, as commentator Will Hutton claims, 'do not possess the mental equipment to be rational about why and what they choose.' The idea that growing numbers of us are all, to a greater or lesser extent, mentally ill—that we are overwhelmed by material progress and, indeed, by life itself—leads to the conclusion that we need some sort of state- or employer-sponsored intervention to 'support' us. It is this self-fulfilling prophecy that has fuelled the rise of mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy, and resilience training.

Diet Science
Diets come and diets go, as do diet ideas. I've long been a fan of "burn more calories than you consume." But I've read enough to know that the type of calories makes a difference too. Now we're told that the calories we burn in exercise may not be all that important to losing weight. Is nothing sacred in the diet world? Maybe our bodies and how they work are more mysterious than we are wont to admit.

Grace and peace,
