Billy Graham and evangelicalism
The
Rev. Billy Graham, who helped lead the modern American evangelical
movement for decades, died Wednesday at age 99. Evangelical Protestants,
measured mainly by denomination, continue to make up a significant
share of all Americans – about a quarter, according to the 2014 Religious Landscape Study. While evangelicals have been declining slightly as a percentage of all U.S. adults, they have been growing as a share of all Protestants – and Christians overall – in America. Evangelicals tend to be highly religious and politically conservative. This is true no matter how evangelicalism is measured, but there are different ways to measure it. Regardless of their denomination, more than a third of Americans consider themselves “born-again or evangelical” Christians.
