March 20 - San Diego County Coronavirus Developments

Here is a list of the major developments in the coronavirus epidemic facing San Diego County, updated at 9:30 p.m. on Friday.

• There have been 110 cases of coronavirus disease among San Diego County residents as of Friday afternoon. Additionally, there have been 11 cases involving people quarantined at Miramar and 10 cases involving non-residents, primarily military personnel. So far, there have been no deaths.
• Across California there have been 1,006 cases and 19 deaths as of 12:34 p.m. Friday.
• The Trump administration announced that closure of non-essential movement across the Canadian border will be accompanied by similar limits on the Mexican border effective Saturday.
• Chula Vista City Councilman Steve Padilla is hospitalized with COVID-19. He is in an intensive-care unit and has been placed on a respirator to aid with difficulty breathing. Padilla is chair of the California Coastal Commission.
• Walmart will hire more than 6,200 people in California to work in stores, clubs, distribution facilities and fulfillment centers to support customer demand during the coronavirus pandemic.
• A sixth San Diego-based sailor has tested positive for the coronavirus. The Navy said the sailor is assigned to the Commander, Naval Air Forces at North Island.

• The Port of San Diego is working with cruise lines to conclude voyages that were underway when the cruise companies suspended operations last week.
• Overseers of the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner service have reduced train schedules on the San Diego to San Luis Obispo rail corridor.
• San Diego’s theatermakers are gig workers, and with the declaration of a national emergency, and the state requiring staying at home and shuttering arts organizations, they’re definitely hurting.
• United Way of San Diego County is offering emergency assistance for low-wage workers who need help paying bills or making rent or mortgage payments during the coronavirus pandemic.
• The Poway Unified School District will consolidate its free meal services starting Monday to reduce interaction between parents, children and providers.
• Father Joe’s Villages established an emergency fund to raise money for the homeless during the COVID-19 crisis.

• The Balboa Park Conservancy canceled its annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration event, originally scheduled for May 2.
