Perspectives are always
interesting and something to learn from. In the readings today we have
different scenarios of life. In the first reading we have the widow and her son
that only have enough flour for one last meal, then they are going to give up
and starve to death. I’m curious as to what brought the widow to that state of
mind. She has a son to raise and a life to live, but she has given up. Then
someone appears and asks her to give all that she has so he can have some bread
to eat. What would cause him to think and act like that?
Then in the Gospel we hear about the woman with two coins, all that she has, and she puts them in the basket at the temple knowing that rich people will ridicule her while they give from their deep pockets.
Sometimes being so harsh and judgmental is a witness to who they really are. I’m reminded of the Scripture where it reads, that God takes care of the birds of the sky, and where Jesus says that we will always have the poor amongst us.
I believe that God provides for us ways to help those in need. Feeding the poor, helping the homeless, being there for our elderly, etc. Even though the temple receives donations and really doesn’t need the widow’s two coins, I believe that deep in her heart, she gives because she knows that some way, somehow, there is a heavenly reward awaiting her, so out of love she gives. It is in their generosity that they serve. Stewardship is what we have to offer. How we do that is up to us. My mother had a plaque that I now have and it reads, “my pay might not be enough, but my reward in heaven will be great!”
