Feature: Military Outreach Ministry
Camp Pendleton in California is one of the largest U.S. marine bases in the country. Service men and women who train and live in this sprawling military community north of San Diego have served multiple tours of duty in Iraq, and many of them have been killed or wounded in the conflict. And as the war drags on, the financial and emotional challenges mount. To help Iraq war veterans and their families through the hardship, Camp Pendleton offers an on-site military outreach ministry. Sponsored by a Presbyterian-affiliated organization, the ministry reaches out in several different ways -- through food distribution, parenting classes, religious counseling and social events -- to provide both financial and spiritual support to service families in need, regardless of faith.
Saul Gonzalez provides a behind-the-scenes look at the work being done by the Camps outreach ministry. "It is our Christian duty to help others," notes Faye Bell, a former navy pilot who serves as the Camps director of outreach ministry. "They move from all over the country and some out of the country and they know no one. That is what we are here for, is just to keep a sense of community going and let them know that there is a place for them."
